WGLN II Faculty Grants Support Stanford-Sweden Collaborations

The Governing Board of the Wallenberg Global Learning Network II (WGLN II) announced 13 collaborative research grants for faculty projects in July of 2005, each aimed at achieving better learning outcomes and producing new knowledge for best learning practices. Projects were selected following a peer review process by ten Swedish and US reviewers. The 2005 grants pair Stanford faculty members from different departments, schools and groups, with colleagues at ten Swedish universities.

Project teams began their yearlong research studies on September 1, 2005. Topics include: case-based examination in medicine and teacher education; learning radiology in simulated environments; degrees of engagement in global teamwork for project-based learning in engineering, construction management, and architecture; integrating mobile devices for design thinking; international perspectives of global world history for high school education; and computerized cognitive training of working memory for primary and secondary school students. More detailed descriptions of the projects and the principal investigators are available at the WGLN II web site: http://www.wgln.org.

“This unique competitive faculty grants program between researchers in Sweden and at Stanford brings together content faculty from a variety of disciplines with responsibility for teaching core courses, with technology experts and researchers in the learning sciences. The opportunity for faculty to contribute significantly to enhancing teaching and learning within their disciplines is vital to improving education for all students.” H. Craig Heller, Biological Sciences.

Supported through a 2004 Gift to Stanford from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, WGLN II projects are a joint effort to develop innovative pedagogic and technical solutions for use in a wide-range of teaching and learning environments, from pre-college through university and post-graduate education.

The Governing Board of the WGLN II is comprised of Stanford Professor, H. Craig Heller (Chair), Provost John Etchemendy, Dean of Research, Arthur Bienenstock, and Professor and President, Emeritus, Donald Kennedy. Swedish members are Mr. Johan Stalhand (President of the Marcus and Marianne Wallenberg Foundation) Dr. Bjorn Svedberg and Dr. Hakan Mogren.
