“Futures of Learning:” Wikimedia Foundation’s Jimmy Wales May 17

As SCIL’s monthly lecture series winds up for the academic year Wikimedia Foundation founder Jimmy Wales comes to Wallenberg Hall at 7 p.m. on May 17. The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, features international scholars, policy makers, researchers and educators whose work is transforming education today.

Jimmy Wales is a well-known figure in the world of wikis -- the open content web forum that fosters online discussion and community. His foundation aims to develop and maintain open content, wiki-based projects that are accessible to anyone free of charge. In addition to the multilingual general encyclopedia Wikipedia, the Foundation manages a multi-language dictionary and thesaurus, Wiktionary, an encyclopedia of quotations, and collections of e-books for children and adults. Wales will discuss his revolutionary work and the impact of wikis on the world of education and technology.
