International Affiliate Program brings global partners closer
In 2003, SCIL launched an international research collaboration with
the Distance Learning Laboratory at the Russian Academy of Education.
The comprehensive evaluation
project, conducted jointly with Stanford University’s Institute for
International Studies (IIS), assesses changes in argument efficacy, opinion
formulation, critical
thinking, writing, and attitudes toward social science inquiry. The program
involves students enrolled in a Stanford University political science course
taught at ten Russian universities.
This new affiliate program is part of the
SCIL’s efforts to infuse learning,
teaching, and research with a global perspective. The International Affiliate
Program (IAP) provides a global hub for other research centers at Stanford
and beyond.
Collaborative projects with international partners represent
an important part of the SCIL and WGLN research portfolio. SCIL interacts
and collaborates
with
a broad range of international entities with the goal of creating a community
of universities, government and other research institutions.
Digital video
technology (CD-ROMS), low-bandwidth asynchronous and synchronous computer-supported
learning environments, and local tutorial support represent
some of the technologies utilized in the distance learning initiative,
which is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
International Affiliates benefit from a variety of opportunities. They
can:
- Become part of a select network of knowledgeable peers from diverse
institution
- Collaborate with academic leaders in the field of
innovation, learning sciences, and technology;
- Gain preferred access
to conferences and topical mini symposiums at Stanford;
- Receive early
updates on ongoing SCIL and WGLN research projects;
- Enjoy increased
fund-raising potential for joint research initiatives;
- Participate
in the visiting scholar program;
- Shape the rapidly evolving landscape
in e-learning and innovation;
- Develop joint publications.
SCIL is committed to building and maintaining
relationships around the world by expanding its learning network
to include other
universities and research organizations. A particular area of interest
is the exploration
of innovative
information and communication technologies
for learning in underserved communities and developing countries.
