Building Robust Online Assessment

Jay Pfaffman, researcher at the Stanford University School of Education, discussed an online assessment system he's developed that gives students immediate feedback on their answers as well as opportunities to access resources during the assessment at the SIG:Assessment held March 4. Pfaffman's system also provides feedback for the teacher, showing at a glance how the class performed on each question as well as which multiple-choice foils were chosen by the class as a whole. These system features offer new opportunities for learning to both teacher and student.

SCIL sponsors SIG:Assessment to bring together faculty, researchers, and students on campus and throughout the Bay Area who work on practical ways to evaluate new instructional methods. Each meeting begins with a brief presentation on valid assessment methods. Then SIG participants discuss an assessmen "challenge"--a specific assessment issue faced by members of the group--and collaborate on solutions.

The SIG:Assessment is directed by Daniel Schwartz, Professor, Stanford School of Education. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 4:30 PM in Peter Wallenberg Learning Theater, Wallenberg Hall (Building 160 on the Main Quadrangle). These meetings are open to the public; new members are welcome.
