WILD@Stanford June 10:
Mobile Medicine
At the final meeting of the WILD@Stanford for 2003, Todd Grappone,
Associate Director of IRT and Head of Computing Systems at Lane Medical
Library, discussed the use of handheld computing devices in the medical
school curriculum.
In Fall 2000, the Lane Medical Library initiated the Stanford
Palm project and distributed handheld digital computers to
all pre-clinical students at Stanford Medical School. The project goals
were to help students learn medical concepts as well as to prepare them
to practice medicine in the coming era of mobile computing.
The Stanford Palm development team has created and made
available innovative educational tools that are mobile, comprehensive,
and interactive including electronic flashcards, dynamic teaching games,
searchable references, and assessment. During the session, Grappone and
collegaue Michelle deomnstrated theinstantaneous in-class assessment.
WILD@Stanford is a special interest group that includes
faculty, researchers, and students on campus and throughout the Bay Area
who use Wireless Internet Learning Devices to improve teaching and learning.
WILD@Stanford is directed by Roy
Pea, director of SCIL and professor of education and the learning
sciences.
Meetings will resume in the Fall 2003. To be added to the WILD
mailing list, please email Nora Sweeny: noras4@stanford.edu.
